What Is the Bund?
The Bund (Waitan) is Shanghai's historic waterfront along the western bank of the Huangpu River. For over a century it has stood as the symbol of the city — a row of grand colonial-era banks and trading houses facing the futuristic skyscrapers of Pudong across the water.
The Best Time to Visit
The Bund rewards a visit at both ends of the day. Early morning (before ~9 am) is calm and great for photos without crowds. Sunset and night are the magic hours, when the Pudong skyline — Oriental Pearl Tower, Jin Mao, Shanghai Tower — lights up across the river.

Looking east from the Bund you'll see Shanghai's modern icon cluster. For the elevated version, cross the river or enjoy the panorama from a higher vantage such as the Shanghai Tower observation deck, which pairs perfectly with a Bund visit at dusk.

The Bund's western side holds dozens of early-20th-century buildings — banks, hotels and clubs in classical, baroque and art-deco styles.
