Best Time to Visit Shanghai 2026: A Month-by-Month Guide

Overview

Shanghai enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. The best overall time to visit is spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when temperatures are mild (15–25°C), humidity is low, and the skies are clearer — ideal for sightseeing, the Bund strolls and outdoor photography.

Shanghai Weather by Season

Spring (March–May)

The cherry blossoms bloom, parks turn green, and it rarely rains for long stretches. Average highs reach 18–25°C. This is many locals' favorite season, though late spring can bring occasional drizzle.

Summer (June–August)

Hot, humid and wet — daily highs often exceed 33°C with heavy afternoon showers. July–August see the Plum Rain (Meiyu) season in June and typhoon season from July. Best value for flights/hotels, but bring an umbrella and light clothing.

Autumn (September–November)

Warm, dry and comfortable — widely considered the best season. October especially offers clear skies, golden light over the Bund, and moderate crowds before the winter rush.

Winter (December–February)

Cold (3–10°C) and damp, but rarely freezing. Fewer tourists, lower prices, and you can still enjoy indoor attractions like the Shanghai Museum and the Shanghai Tower observation deck.

💡 Pro Tip

For the most pleasant sightseeing and photography, aim for mid-April to May or mid-September to October. Avoid the Chinese public-holiday Golden Weeks (early May and early October) if you prefer fewer crowds.
