Shanghai has one of the most comprehensive public transportation systems in the world. With a modern metro network, reliable taxis, the world's fastest commercial train, and easy ride-hailing apps, getting around the city is efficient and affordable.
Shanghai Metro (地铁)
The Shanghai Metro is the backbone of city transport and the most convenient way to reach most attractions. It's fast, clean, affordable, and operates in both Chinese and English.
- Lines: 11+ lines covering 278+ stations across the city
- Hours: Approximately 5:30 AM – 11:00 PM daily
- Fares: ¥3–9 depending on distance (about $0.40–$1.25 USD)
- Payment: Shanghai Metro card (交通卡), WeChat Pay, Alipay, or contactless bank cards at ticket machines
- English signage: Full English announcements and station names on all lines

The metro is the fastest and cheapest way around Shanghai during peak hours when roads are congested. Line 2 connects Pudong Airport to the city center, and Line 10 gives you easy access to the Bund, Yu Garden, and Lujiazui.
Taxis (出租车)
Shanghai's taxis are plentiful and relatively affordable. Look for official taxis from reputable companies:
- Starting fare: ¥10.8 for the first 5 km (about $1.50 USD)
- Per km rate: ¥1.6 per additional km
- Recommended companies: 大众 (Dazhong), 强生 (Qiangsheng), 锦江 (Jinjiang)

Where to find taxis: Taxi stands at hotels, shopping malls, metro stations, and major attractions. You can also hail them on the street (look for the green "空车/vacant" light on the roof).
Maglev Train (磁悬浮)
The Shanghai Maglev is the world's fastest commercial train and a must-try experience for transport enthusiasts:
- Route: Longyang Road Station ↔ Pudong International Airport
- Journey time: Just 7 minutes!
- Top speed: 431 km/h (268 mph)
- Fare: ¥50 single / ¥80 return (about $7/$11 USD)

Public Bus (公交车)

- Get a Shanghai Metro Card (交通卡) — works on metro, buses, and some taxis; saves time at turnstiles
- Travel off-peak when possible — metro and roads are packed during 7:30–9:30 AM and 5:30–7:30 PM
- Metro is king — it's the most reliable and fastest way to get around; avoid road traffic entirely
- Download offline maps — Google Maps may be unreliable; use Amap (高德) or Baidu Maps
- Airport transfers: Metro Line 2 or Maglev to Pudong Airport; Metro Line 10 to Hongqiao Airport
